OBITUARY – Watkins Express, Watkins Glen, N. Y., May 19, 1943. Page 4:
Mrs. Libbie L. Smith passed away quite unexpectedly at the Stamp farm home on the County Line Road, Sunday morning, May 9, 1943, where she had been tenderly cared for during the past two years by Mrs. Mae Stamp, a close relative of her husband. She had been in failing health for some time.
Most of her life had been spent in Elmira and Big Flats. She and her husband moved here in 1941.
Mrs. Smith was born in Pine Valley, N. Y., December 29, 1861. She was the daughter of William D. and Loretta Mosher Earle, her maiden name being Libbie Loretta Earle.
She married Samuel L. Smith on Dec. 28, 1881. Last year they celebrated their sixty-first anniversary.
“Aunt Libbie” as she was familiarly known, had a genial, friendly nature, which endeared her to a host of friends and acquaintances. She was most hospitable and generous.
During her brief stay here, she had made friends among her neighbors and others, who will miss her cheery presence.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 12, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Woodhull in Elmira, the Rev. Henry White, pastor of the Lake Street Presbyterian Church, officiating. She was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery.
A profusion of floral tributes attested to the high esteem with which she was held.
She is survived by her husband Samuel F. Smith; a foster daughter, Mrs. Floyd Woodhull, Elmira; two great nephews, Charles Earl of Etna, N. Y. and Clifford Earl of Pittsburgh, Pa.; one great niece, Mrs. Kenneth Millspaugh, Odessa.
