Monroe Nance
______
Venerable Citizen Goes To His Reward.
______
Native of Benton, But Long in Business In This City
______
Following a five week's illness of general debility, Mr. Monroe Nance, Sr., 75 years old, died Saturday night at 7:30 o'clock at his home, Nineteenth and Clark streets. For the last year Mr. Nance had been in ill health and his death was not a surprise to his many friends.

Mr. Nance was born at Benton, being the eldest in a family of twelve children, surviving all of them except his youngest brother, T. W. Nance of Denver, Col.

For 32 years he was engages in the undertaking business and retired only a few years ago. For 17 years he served as coroner of McCracken county.

Mr. Nance was a highly respected citizen and always had the welfare of both his friends and the city at heart.

Besides his wife and one brother he is survived by six sons and three daughters. They are: Messrs. Leon Nance, of Ogden, Utah; Joe Nance, of El Paso, Texas, and Monroe Nance of Bardwell, and Guy, Ed and Monroe Nance, Jr., of this city. His daughters are Miss Hattie Nance, of this city, and Miss Adah Wood, of Dallas, Texas, and Mrs. Neil Warner, of this city.

Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock and burial at Oak Grove cemetery, the Rev. D. W. Fooks officiating.

The Paducah Evening Sun .(Ky), Monday, September 12, 1910, p. 4

Because of finding the 1850 Census of Marshall County, Kentucky (where his obituary says he was born), the Census shows that Monroe's name was "Joseph G M (George Monroe) Nance" and that he was born in Georgia. The family resided in Marshall County but he was born in Georgia. Other records show Georgia also (i.e. 1860, 1880 and 1900).

His Obituary shows "surviving youngest brother, T W Nance of Denver, Col." Researching his brother further finds Thomas in Denver in the 1910 Census and that he is "Thomas Milton or T M Nance". He was born in Kentucky in 1858.

The father of the Nance children was Clement Nance (shown in Monroe's Death Record). Clement was born in Tennessee in 1811 and died about 1858-1860 in Mayfield, Graves County, KY. Monroe's mother was Malinda A Ledbetter and she was born in Alabama in 1820 and died in Hickman County, KY.
