Kieran was a farm laborer who lived in the village of Clara. In October 1922, at the age of just 17, he left Ireland to start a new life in America. His ship, the SS President Polk arrived in New York that November.
He was working as an elevator operator and living in Manhattan when he enlisted in the Army in September 1942. He served for the duration of the war.
It's unknown what became of his widow Mary. At the time of his death, she stated her intention to be buried with him, but she was not.
✞ Kieran Day is buried at Long Island National Cemetery, far from the green fields of his nativity, County Offaly.
