Mothers's thoughts on her children

(In the order they came to her)

Pat, my good right arm, has seen me through the three worst times in my life. Tireless in serving others, a wide view with love and charity for all, she is goodness in action.

Leonard; the quiet one I like to be with. We don't need to talk. Many are the lovely gifts he has brought from his travels - all chosen with love. (Pat's husband)

Mary Bob, the sensitive one, warm hearted, quick to befriend and to help those in need, dealing with life's problems lovingly and with courage.

Fred, is capable and industrious, generous, kind, loving, a true friend and son. (Mary Bob's husband)

Margaret John, the little dove who found no rest for the sole of her foot and returned unto him in the ark.

Mr. Bill - If ever honor had a child he is that child. Firm and upright in character, compassionate, charitable, and helpful to those in need, a loving husband and father, brother and son, he will never leave us.

Dear Pippa, my springtime girl. A true friend from the beginning, we shall be to the end. Capable, courageous and loving. She is a gift to me from Mr. Bill. (Bill's wife)

Joe Pete, my handsome baby, is quiet, thoughtful, good tempered and not too critical. His real gift is understanding people. Steady, dependable, loveable - he is my good rock.

Lovely Dale is eager to learn and bold to carry out her plans. A loving wife, excellent mother and devoted friend, she is my daughter in love.

June Monahan

Wife and Mother

Beloved by family

Lived in Blackstone, VA

Known as Mudge to the family.

I have no idea where the name came from though.

Mudge lived alone for years after the death of her husband Bill. She tended her loved iris garden, managing the Greyhound Bus Station in Blackstone until they stopped coming through Blackstone.

She moved to the Shenandoah Valley and lived with her youngest daughter, Mary Bob, when she could no longer live alone. After Mary Bob had a stroke, she moved to Hinsdale, Illinois and lived with her oldest daughter, Pat.

The night that she died, she asked Pat to stay with her instead of going to her adjoining room. She must have felt that the end was near. She died that night but not alone. She had her eldest daughter with her until the end.

--------------------------------------

Story about how June and Bill met (provided by daughter, Pat):

In the fall of 1922, brothers Dale and Max Reed invited people to a 'possum hunt. Ginny and June Zilles who lived in Wilsons, VA were invited and were encouraged to go because they had heard that Old Bill Monahan was going to be there.

Saturday night came. Everyone straggled into the yard in their (or their Dad's) Tin Lizzies.

"June! Here's Ole Bill from Blackstone! June gazed in astonishment. This red-headed kid couldn't be much older than she was. He'd turned twenty that year. Good looking, too, though dressed in work clothes and an old hat, appropriate dress for a 'possum hunt. She mumbled hello, and he walked her away from the crowd so he could hear here. Eventually everyone got started into the woods. June and Bill saw a log big enough to sit on comfortably, and sat on it. The hour and a quarter the 'possum hunters were gone, they sat and talked.

For two people who hardly opened their mouth when with others, these two bookish introverts had so much to talk about, they winced when they heard the hunters returning, and turned dismayed glances on each other. Before going in to supper, June and Jinny agreed Bill Monahan could drive them the fourteen miles home to learn the way. The girls told the people who brought them that they had a ride back, thanks! Bill drove them home and was there again the next afternoon.

--------------------------------------

June Zilles married William John Monahan June 10, 1925, and year and a half later. Bill aged almost 23, and June 21.
