Levi Pennington was born June 20, 1850 in Perry Co., Kentucky, and died August 27, 1922. He married (1) Rebecca Margaret Sheppard Abt. 1867 in Harlan Co., Kentucky, daughter of John Sheppard and Elizabeth Baker. She was born February 15, 1847 in Perry Co., Kentucky, and died December 21, 1932. He married (2) Sally Lewis November 13, 1902 in Clay Co., Kentucky, daughter of Timothy Lewis and Nancy Baker. She was born 1862 in Leslie Co., Kentucky, and died 1941.

Levi was a preacher. He acquired the original family dinner bell which was passed down to William, Levi and James A. Pennington. Photo of Levi's Grave on file.

The 1860 Clay Co., Kentucky Census #367 lists Levi age 10 living with his parents Ephriam Aaron and Matilda.

The 1870 Harlan Co., Kentucky Census # 31-31 lists Levi 20 (born in Perry Co.) and Rebecca 23 (born in Perry Co.) with William 4 and Isaac 3 months (both born in Kentucky).

The 1880 Leslie Co., Kentucky Census, page 527a, #97-97 lists Levi 29 and Rebecca 33 with William 12, Isaac 10, Virginia 8, Marthy 4 and Larkin 2.

The 1900 Clay Co. Census, page 137b #299-308 lists Levi 49 ( born June 1850 in Kentucky) and Rebecky 53 ( born Feb. 1847 in Kentucky) married 33 years with 7 children born-7 children living. The children listed with them were Martha 23 (b.Feb.1877), Daniel 18 (b. June 1881), Dory 9 (b Oct 1890) & gson James 3 (b Sept 1896).

It appears that Levi and Rebecca were divorced after the 1900 Census and before November 1902. The Clay Co., Kentucky Marriage Index lists Levi Pennington married to Sallie Maggard on Nov. 13, 1902.

The 1910 Clay Co., Kentucky Census, page 90b. #112-117, lists Levi 59 ( married 2 times, married 7 years) and Sarah (Sallie) 47 (born in Kentucky, married 2 times, married 7 years, 9 children born-9 children living, parents born in Kentucky) with children Joshua 7, Charley 5, Mary J. Maggard 17, and Nicholas Maggard 10.

The 1920 Clay Co., Kentucky Census Pg 3a, # 51-45 lists Levi 69 and Sallie 58 with John S. 16 (believed to be Joshua) and Charlie 14.

Kentucky Death Cert. # 17522 lists Levi's age as 72 at the time of his death on August 27, 1922.

A Harlan County Web Page Marriage Record lists a Levi Pennington who married Manerva Hendrix on November 3, 1873. This data requires follow-up as the only oblivious Manerva Hendrix was James Hendricks first wife Manerva Lewis. The research seems clear that Levi's first wife was Rebecca Sheppard and his second wife was Sarah "Sallie" (Lewis) Maggard. James Hendricks was the step-father of Rebecca Sheppard. It is possible that James first wife Manerva married a different Levi after their separation.

Three of Levi's sons (Dan, Isaac and Larkin) married sisters who were the daughters of Jack Williams and Jane Joseph. In addition, there are an amazing number of family links to the Sheppard, Lewis, Baker, Howard, Ferguson, Goforth and other Pennington Family Lines associated with this Levi and his descendents.

Levi Pennington was buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Clay Co., Kentucky.

Rebecca 4 is listed in the 1850 Perry Co., Kentucky Census #74 living with her mother Elizabeth (Baker) Sheppard who is the head of house. They were located two dwellings from James Hendrix who later became Elizabeth Sheppard's second husband.

Becca 63 is listed in the 1910 Clay Co., Kentucky Census page 91A. # 115-120 living with her son Daniel Pennington. Rebecca had 7 children born and 7 living. She was listed as a widow, but her first husband Levi was still alive and remarried.

Rebecca 73 is listed in the 1920 Clay Co., Kentucky Census Pg.3a # 43-43 living with her daughter Dora and her husband Dan Wittemore. In this census Rebecca was listed as divorced.

Rebecca has been listed as a Hendricks in several sources. The book "Dozens of Cousins" lists Rebecca's parents as John Sheppard and Elizabeth Baker. James Hendricks is believed to have been her step-father and she may have used the Hendricks name at the time of her marriage to Levi. Research of the Sheppard and Baker Lines also support the fact that she was the daughter of Elizabeth Baker and John Sheppard. This would place Rebecca as a descendant of William Sheppard b.abt.1770 and Elvira Lewis b.1772.

Rebecca Margaret Sheppard was buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Clay Co., Kentucky.

Before Sally Lewis married Levi Pennington in 1902, Sarah was first married to a Maggard and according to the 1910 Clay Co., Kentucky Census had 9 children born with 9 children living. It appears she may have had at least 6 children prior to marrying Levi. Her first husband was believed to be Israel Maggard and although not confirmed, Ken Maggard suggests her maiden name could have been Lewis. In a file received from Ruth Lewis, Sally Lewis b.1862, daughter of Timothy Lewis b.1816 and Nancy Baker b.1820, married Israel Maggard b.1864.

This file has been modified to reflect this Sally Lewis and Sarah Maggard as the same individual and will remain as such until proven otherwise.
