Robertson served in the Confederate Army from 1861 through 1865. After attending the University of Virginia, he joined the Fayette Artillery, then the Henrico Artillery. He was wounded in the left leg at Gettysburg. Afterward, he served as a private in Company C of the 43rd Virginia Cavalry, Mosby's. Walter became an Espiscopalian Minister and married Georgia Ripley. In 1885 he was installed as pastor of Warrenton Presbyterian Church and served until 1903, when he reported the membership being 103.
