Academic, Politician and Businessman. Manuel Francisco Ayau Cordón was an intellectual, academic, businessman, and liberal politician from Guatemala. He was a mechanical engineer and the founder of the Center for Economic-Social Studies (CEES), the Francisco Marroquín University (UFM) and institutions dedicated to the dissemination of classical liberalism. After diverse studies, he obtained a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Louisiana State University in 1950, an L.H.D. from Hillsdale College in 1973, and an honorary degree in law (Legum Doctor) from Northwood University in 1994. During the last years of his life, he promoted a partial reform of the Constitution of Guatemala through the Asociación Cívica ProReforma. The objective was to strengthen the rule of law and respect for individual rights in the country. In life he was considered one of the most influential liberals in Latin America. He also was a legislator and candidate for president and vice president.
