She was married first to Littleton Tazewell Robertson, who enlisted in the Confederate Army of Virginia. He was a private in the 18th Virginia calvary, and as a result of the battle at Seven Pines, VA, was mortally wounded and died in June 1862. There are letters from him to her which are in the keeping of the Virginia Historical Society in Richmond. Before Littleton's enlistment, they had three children, Floyd Bolling Robertson, Anna Cora Robertson, and Littleton Tazewell Robertson Jr.

Next she married a distant cousin, William Thomas Flippin. He was her first cousin through her mother, Nancy Flippin. Nancy's brother Robert Flippin was the father of William Thomas. Martha and William T had one son after their marriage, H. Bruce Flippin.
