Sara retired and returned to Jackson, TN in 1971 where she resumed active participation in community affairs. She returned to the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of her youth, and became a ruling elder, and a member of Circle One of the Women's Ministry. She was also active in the Jackson Women's Club, Christian Women's Club and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. She traveled extensively throughout the world and enjoyed bridge, reading and conversation.
She was preceded in death by her husband and sisters Katherine Alexander, Alberta Lawrence, and brothers Waima Lohrig, George Lohrig and Clifford Lohrig. Survivors include her son David R. Barry and his wife Patricia Barry of Wellfleet, MA, and daughter Sara Barry Brown and her husband Ronald Brown of Lafayette, CA; grandchildren, Kent, Sally, Todd, David, Scott and Tracey and six great-grandchildren. Sara enjoyed the love and support of her nieces and nephews in Jackson, TN; Fred Lawrence, James Lawrence, Jane Gilley and Katherine Moore and her loving, caring friend DeeDee Rives.
Visitation will be at the Lawrence and Sorensen Funeral Home on Saturday, November 13, 2004 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the chapel in the funeral home at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, November 14, 2004 with burial to follow at Hollywood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to First Cumberland Presbyterian Church or Hospice of West Tennessee. Pallbearers include the grandsons, Ray Coates, Norman Henry and Charles Garrett, Sr.
