Motion picture director and screenwriter.
Born Antonio Valerii, he started his career - after studies at the Centro sperimentale di cinematografia - in the early 1960s as assistent director, among others, on Sergio Leone's "Per un pugno di dollari/A Fistful of Dollars" and "Per qualche dollaro in più/For a Few Dollars More". His directorial debut came in 1966 with "Per il gusto di uccidere", starring Craig Hill. His next western "I giorni dell'ira/Day of Anger" (1967, starring Lee Van Cleef) became a major international success and established him as one of the more important Italian directors of the 1960s and 1970s, culminating in his biggest success, the Western parody "Il mio nome è Nessuno/My Name is Nobody" (1973, with Henry Fonda and Terence Hill). Other credits include "Una ragione per vivere e una per morire/A Reason to Live, a Reason to Die" (1972, with James Coburn), "Sahara Cross" (1977, with Franco Nero), "Sicilian Connection" (1987, with Toshiro Mifune) and "Una vacanza all'inferno" (1997). Since the 80s also a lot of television work, mainly directing, writing and producing for RAI. He died in a Roman clinic.
