President of the European Parliament. From an early age he worked as a journalist for small newspapers and press agencies, before moving to the Roman editorial office of the newspaper 'Il Giorno', where he remained for seven years. In 1992 he began his career as a television reporter and correspondent for 'TG3' of the 'Rai Radio Televisione Italiana'. Subsequently he worked on other information programs on 'Rai Uno' and 'Rai Due', before joining, in 1999, the editorial staff of 'TG1' as a special correspondent. Over the next ten years he was responsible for managing prime time news and was responsible for covering major national and international events and services. In 2007 he became deputy director of 'TG1' and in charge of the in-depth programs 'TV7' and 'Speciale TG1'. Engaged from an early age in the activities of various educational associations, such as Scouts and Catholic youth movements, he has always considered possible a close collaboration between the latter and the laity. When the Italian Democratic Party (PD) was born in 2007, Sassoli decided to join it, considering it the right place to give voice to his political commitment. On 7 June 2009 he was elected deputy of the European Parliament in the constituency for central Italy. During the 2009-2014 legislature he was head of delegation of the Democratic Party. In 2014 he ran again in the European elections where he was elected MEP for the Democratic Party with over 200,000 preferences. On 1 July of the same year he was elected Vice-President of the European Parliament with 393 votes, resulting in the second most voted in the PD-PSE share and holding the position as responsible for Mediterranean politics, the budget and real estate. As a member of the Transport and Tourism Commission he was the rapporteur for the European railway reform (IV Railway Package) and the Single European Sky. On 26 May 2019 he was elected European Parliamentarian for the third time with 128,533 votes and 3 July 2019 he became President of the European Parliament. He died of complications from severe immune system dysfunction.
