They left Tavernola for Marina di Mandria, in the province of Taranto, to spend their holidays on August 1st, the day before the explosion. Upon arriving in Bologna they had an accident; they were not injured but the car broke down. So, the Mauri family decided to leave the car at a mechanic in Casalecchio di Reno, near Bologna, and take a train to Brindisi and eventually reach the holiday town. On the 2nd of August, they arrived at the station just moments before the explosion killed them.
