Although the story cannot be proven, in March of 1946, Garry Weston was born whistling a tune.
Garry joined one of the sweetest and kindest families in Willowdale. His mother Queenie and father Sidney and his big brother Bob (Heather) with his younger brother Dennis (Bea) soon to follow.
Garry's childhood was spent in a flurry of adventures, some of the stories which will live on in infamy. There is a story about a parachute and a vespa that is rumoured to have made the local papers.
He learned how to play the accordion and piano where he would volunteer to play for the Epilepsy Society Dances. Many a night has been spent listening to Garry belt out a polka on his accordion.
As a young teenager, Garry met his future wife Mindy. It was meant to be when Mindy agreed to a date even after Garry had run his future mother-in-law's undergarments up the school flag pole.
The pair married in August of 1967 and they welcomed their daughters Kerri (Warren), Amber (Kev) & Krista within the first 4 years. The young family lived in Richmond Hill, before making their way to Newmarket. In the early 90's, as Garry and Mindy's girls were leaving the nest, a decision was made to move north to Oro and share a house on the lake and watch their grandchildren grow.
Schuyler (Brad), Taylor, Dallas and Cooper
7 years ago the last move was made just up the street, but with a lot of land and a lot of potential.
Garry welcomed 2 great-grandchildren, Harper & Quinn, and the renovations started. It was a year of adventure as we all lived in bunkies and trailers and built a home that would fit all of us comfortably.
Hijinks & hilarity ensued.
Garry loved music, he loved to dance, he loved to sing. You could always catch Garry singing one line from a song over and over until you couldn't help but sing a long too.
Garry proved to be a hit at weddings, often being pulled up on the dance floor to kick up his heels and if you waited long enough there was a chance to see his infamous hook slide, although that usually meant it was time to get him home.
Garry had a knack for sports and it turned into a lifelong passion. What he lacked in height, he made up with a lot of grit and determination. He was tough, smart, a leader and a great competitor. Baseball, Football, Hockey, Golf... He played them all and they brought him joy and friendships that will continue long into the future.
Summers were spent in one ballpark or another all across Ontario and parts of Canada & the US.
Family came 1st so Mindy & the girls were there every step of the way.
Sundays in the fall were football which included the after game get together often at the Weston home.
In the winter there was hockey which Garry played until a few weeks ago. He often played up to 3 times a week and after arriving home from a late week-night game, he would still be whistling as he left early for work the next day. It was not a surprise to find work papers in his belongings from the hospital.
Garry was well liked and respected by teammates, opponents, umpires and refs alike.
Garry had a gift of leaving lasting impressions on people everywhere he went. Garry truly loved and cherished people and was genuinely happy to have known each and every one of you.
Life-long friendships have been made, some from childhood, some from sports, some from work, and some from the community. One forever friendship even started with a bar fight.
His smile when he saw you, the twinkle in his eye. His laugh as he reached out to shake your hand or draw you in for a hug. He was always happy to see you.
The pandemic has not been easy but Garry's family found it easier being together. Still, Garry missed playing hockey during the last couple of years and drove around with his equipment, in his car, waiting for the day when he could play again.
We could never have imagined that Garry's first game back would result in Covid entering our lives.
Even though all were double vaccinated, the virus broke through and Garry was unable to recover.
A very special thank you to the wonderful care he received at Royal Victoria Hospital.
In lieu of flowers we respectfully encourage you to get vaccinated.
Mindy and the girls are planning to celebrate Garry's life with family and friends, the weekend of June 11th 2022
