Born in Ireland, Patrick came to the US when he was 13. As a young man he joined the old Putnam Hose Company No. 31. He was a foreman in this volunteer organization when the Civil War broke out. When Col. Ellsworth his captain at the same company organized the famous Ellsworth Zouaves he enlisted. Col. Ellsworth's command was one of the first to Washington and Mr. McManus was near the hotel in Arlington the day Col. Ellsworth was shot and killed after having hauled the Confederate flag down from the building. Mr. McManus later joined the 71st Regiment and served until the close of the war. He leaves two sisters Margaret and Mary.
