In memory of my great-grand-aunt

Salvatrice Messina was born October 1, 1914 in Calatabiano, Italy to my maternal great-great-grandparents Santo Messina and Francesca Patanè and was the fourth of six children, which included her namesake half-sister, Salvatrice Raineri; two older brothers, my great-grandfather Giuseppe and Francesco Messina; and two younger siblings, Salvatore and Giuseppina Messina. They all grew up in Calatabiano.

She married Salvatore Gangemi by proxy on January 26, 1948; he was a native of Giarre (a city close to Calatabiano) and had been residing in Babinda, Queensland, Australia since 1939. She reached him in Australia in 1949, arriving in Fremantle on May 24. After settling in Babinda, they went on to see the birth of Vince, their only child, in 1951.

Salvatrice passed away unexpectedly on February 6, 1953 at Babinda District Hospital from complications after cholecystectomy. Her cause of death was recorded on her death certificate as "circulatory failure, pulmonary embolism, subphrenic abscess".

She hadn't told her family in Italy that she was going to have surgery because she she didn't want to worry anyone. The shock of her death was very great as it was so sudden.

This is her obituary, which was published on February 7, 1953 in the Cairns Post (page 5):
The death of Mrs. Salvatrice Gangemi, wife of Mr. Salvatore Gangemi, of Babinda, took place at Babinda early yesterday morning at the age of 38 years. Deceased was born in Italy and was well known at Babinda, where she resided for some time. Besides her widower, she leaves a son, Vince. The funeral will move from St. Rita's Catholic Church, Babinda, at 3 o'clock this afternoon. Requiem Mass will be celebrated at St Rita's Catholic Church, Babinda, at 6.30 a.m. today.
