Saxophonist/clarinetist Woodie Walder was a well known jazz musician when Kansas City was thriving in jazz. He was an original member of the famous Bennie Moten Orchestra as well as the Thamon Hayes Kansas City Rockets band. In the mid-1930's, he joined forces with his brother altoist Herman Walder (1905-1991)to form the Walder Brother's Swing Unit. The Swing Unit also included drummer Baby Lovett; boogie woogie pianist Pete Johnson and Coots Dye, trumpeter Booker Washington and other notables. The band was well received and played famous venues such as Lucille's Paradise, The Old Kentucky, Vine Street Varieties and the Spinning Wheel. In later years, Woodie retired from music but no doubt left his mark as a true Kansas City musician. Yes, he had an original sound all of his own in addition to being a dynamic show man. Woodie, along with his brother Herman, were top class musicians all the way and are fondly remembered.
