After a courageous battle with cancer, Olivia Griffin Whaley, 53, went to be with Jesus on July 6, 2005, at her home.
A devoted mother and wife, she is survived by her husband of 31 years, Jerry Whaley; one son, Mark Whaley of the home; and daughter and son-in-law, Amanda and Casey Anderson of Faison; brothers and sisters include, Jewel Autry of Goldsboro, who was her loving older sister, Mary and Richard McKeller of Wilson, Jimmy Griffin of Dudley, Wendell and Cheryl Griffin of Dudley, and David and Joyce Griffin of Wilson; and special niece, Angie Sides.
Olivia was preceded in death by her parents, Emma Grady Griffin and Oliver Holmes Griffin.
Always putting others first, Olivia devoted her life to family, church and school. She invested her entire self to insure her family success. She valued Christian service to children. For more than 30 years, Olivia taught Sunday School, directed children's choir, directed children's hand bells and played the piano for church services.
She was the chairperson for the 2005 Relay for Life and was a member of the Purple Star Survivors Team. Olivia was also a member of the North Carolina Gamma Gamma Chapter of the Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Sorority for Women Educators.
Olivia loved teaching. To her it was more than a job. Of her 30 years of service, 29 years were at Brogden Primary School. Co-workers remember her for the love and dedication she had for others. Only her illness prevented Olivia from returning for her 31st year in August. Children whom she had taught requested her as teacher for their children.
The family will greet friends Friday evening from 6 until 9 at Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home.
A service of Homecoming will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church of Mount Olive. Rev. Dennis Atwood will be officiating. Burial will follow at Wayne Memorial Park.
Flowers are welcome or memorial contributions may be made in her honor to the American Cancer Society, 930-B Wellness Dr., Greenville, N.C., 27834; or to the First Baptist Scholarship Fund, 300 N. Chestnut St., Mt. Olive, N.C., 28365.
