Civil War Union Brigadier General. At the the start of the Civil War he was a lawyer in practice when in enlisted and was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel in the 14th Ohio Infantry in 1861. In 1862, he was promoted Colonel in command of the 14th Ohio and engaged in actions in Kentucky and West Virginia. He led a brigade of the XIV Corps from the Atlanta campaign through the Carolinas and at the Battle of Jonesboro, he was wounded and averted defeat by leading a bayonet charge. In June 1865, he was promoted Brigadier General and resigned from the Army in December, 1865. He resumed the practice of law in Washington, D.C. until his death.
