Jeane Newell McIlwee, 88, Lees Summit, Missouri died November 20, 2009. She was born on January 20, 1921, the eldest child of Kenneth A. and Alva Utt Newell in Junction City. She attended Geary County High School. She attended Tulsa Business College and was employed as an office clerk for Cain Coffee Company before going to Washington, D.C. to the Signal Corps.
She enlisted in the Women's Army Auxillary Corps in October, 1942, and was commissioned at Ft. Des Moines, Iowa, April 10, 1943.
Jeane served at Ft. Benning, Georgia in the Army Specialized Training Corps. When that unit closed, she was detailed to the Corps of Engineers in St. Louis, Missouri. From there she was posted overseas to Camp Russell B. Huckstep outside of Cairo, Egypt to the WAC Company as executive officer and to the Post Exchange as warehouse manager.
She met her husband, Glenn M. McIlwee, at this station. Upon returning to the United States at the end of the war in October, 1945, she finished her tour of duty at the Pentagon in the Adjutant General's Office.
She married Glenn on September 15, 1946, at the home of her parents in Valley Falls, Kansas.
She earned a degree from Kansas City University in education and a master's degree from the University of Missouri at Kansas City. She taught elementary classes at E.C. Meservey and for a number of years was a helping teacher for special areas on instruction in reading. She belonged to the Missouri State Teachers Association; K.C. Retired Teachers; Nelson Atkins Museum Friends of Art; The Docent Emereti group. The Hottle-Keller Memorial, Winchester, Virginia; WAC Chapter 50, San Diego, California; Lea Manor Gardeners; served as president of the KC Chapter of the International Reading Association in 1974-1975, a member of the Crusaders Class; Mission Hills Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution; a member of the Daughters of the American Colonists and Senior Center of Lees Summit; Central United Methodist Church. She was a P.E.O. member. She was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Newell and her husband, Glenn McIlwee.
