Died Thursday, March 28, 2002

Hugh Washington Blessing, 84, retired Henry County School principal and school board administrator, died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County.

He lived at 562 Richardson Road in Collinsville.

Born Dec. 4, 1917, in Gate City in Scott County, he was a son of John Washington Blessing and Ethel Taylor Blessing. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Louise McCrary Blessing; a sister, Ruth Jolene Blessing, and a brother, James E. Blessing.

He graduated from Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, Tenn.; received a bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and a masters degree from East Tennessee State University in Johnson City. He did post graduate work at the University of Virginia.

He worked at Tennessee Eastman and then taught and coached at schools in Jacksonville and Pensacola, Fla.; at Coeburn and Wise in Virginia; and Sullivan High School in Kingsport.

After serving as principal of Sullivan High School in Tennessee, Blessing came to Henry County where he was principal for a number of years at Campbell Court Elementary School in Bassett and Fieldale-Collinsville High School in Collinsville.

He had served as served on and chaired the Henry County Board of Parks and Recreation; was a member of the Henry County Education Association, president of District E. Education Association, a member of the National Education Association and served on the Southern Association of High Schools.

He was a member of Smith Memorial United Methodist Church in Collinsville where he was in the Charles Wesley Sunday School Class, was a former Sunday school teacher and former chairman of the board. He also had served with Christmas Cheer.

Surviving are his wife, Joan Patterson Blessing of Collinsville; a son, James D. Blessing of Hanover, Md.; two daughters, Melissa "Missy" Blessing Ousley of Florence, S.C., and Martha Jane "Marti" Blessing McVey of Blairs; five grandchildren; one sister, Frances Blessing Reed of Kingsport; two brothers, Al Blessing of Bristol, Tenn., and Gordon Blessing of Kingsport; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Smith Memorial United Methodist Church in Collinsville with the Rev. Rob Colwell officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.

The family will receive friends at Collins Funeral Chapel in Bassett from 7 p.m. until 9 tonight.
