Lawrence E. "Bud" Walter Sr., of 400 Mendon Rd., North Smithfield, a retired salesman, died Nov. 28 at St. Antoine Residence. He was the husband of the late Leone (Currie) Walter. Born in Burrillville, a son of the late Charles W. and Lulu (Dix) Walter, he had lived most of his life in North Smithfield. He had been a salesman at Edgecomb Steel for 30 years, and was previously employed at the Slatersville Finishing Co. He was part of a group of local men who volunteered to teach about World War II. The men gave a living history of World War II to school children which resulted in books written by a fifth-grade class in Norwich, Conn., titled Learning Through Living Histories, and a fifth-grade class in Cumberland, titled Heroes of History. He was an Army Air Forces veteran of World War II. He had attained the rank of sergeant in the 502nd unit of the 101st Airborne Division. He saw action in Normandy, Bastogne, Germany, and Holland. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Presidential Citation with Oak Leaf Cluster. He was a former member of the Logan-Bassett Veterans of Foreign Wars, Forestdale. He was a member of Slatersville Congregational Church, and served on the church council as well as on other committees. He was active in the Boy Scouts in North Smithfield in the 1950s, and the town Republican Party. He leaves a son, Lawrence E. Walter Jr. of Knightsdale, N.C.; a daughter, Jean David of Slatersville; and three grandchildren.
