The only child of Joshua H. Chapman (?-1847) and a Miss Barnett, of Tazewell, Claiborne Co., TN, William B. Chapman was a school teacher. In 1841, he married Anne Eliza Chamberlain (1823-1900), of Corryton, Knox Co., TN, whom he had apparently met a few years earlier when she and her sister came to Tazewell to visit their great aunt, Margaret (Chamberlain) Graham. Anne Eliza was the daughter of Ninian Chamberlain (1792-1877) and Margaret Watkins (1790-1863). William and Anne Eliza were the parents of five children: Lucinda B.; Ninian C.; James J.; Sarah Ellen (Sally); and Mary E. William served in the Mexican War. He is said to have died as the result of an artillery accident during the Civil War. Some sources, including DAR records, give his middle name as "Burton."
