Charles J Mashburn Dies
Instantly from Bolt
of lighting During Storm
--------------------------

Charles J. Mashburn, age 65,
Golden Springs farmer, was in-
stantly killed by a bolt of lightning
late Monday as he sat in his crib
picking peanuts from the vines.
Mr. Mashburn was seated in a
straight-backed chair which was
leaning against the crib wall. The
bolt struck near the roof of the
crib and made its path to the
ground by way of the wall, passing
through Mr Mashburn's body. The
chair was shattered by the bolt and
Mr Mashburn's legs were burned
where they rested against rungs of
the chair. His hair was singed.
James Mashburn, a 9 year old
son, was standing immediately in
front of his father at the time of
the tradegy. He was unhurt although
holding to the same peanut vine
from which Mr Mashburn was picking
peanuts.
Funeral arrangements will be
announced later by Jones, pending
advices from relatives of the
deceased.
Surviving are his wife, nine sons,
Mark of Oklahoma City, Paul of Bessemer,
Ross of San Diego, Walter of Ohatchee,
Alvis and Jack of Talladega, Gaines,
James and Charles, Jr of Golden
Springs, four daughters, Mrs(Edna)
John Hutto,Mrs(Ruth) Cecil Lloyd of
Ohatchee, Miss Eloise and Miss Susie
Mashburn of Golden Springs, a stepson
Andrew Prater of Ohatchee, three
stepdaughters, Mrs CT Haynes of Ohatchee,
Mrs LL Roberts of Oxford and Mrs Owel Bean
of Ragland, two brothers Lester of Bham
and Luther of Ensley and three sisters,
Mrs Gus Smith of Talladega, Mrs OL
Tramell and Mrs Jesse Tramell , both of
Bessemer.
