He grew up in Fleming County, Kentucky. After serving in the Union Army during the Civil War, he spent a short time in Putnam County, Indiana, then moved to Neosho and Allen Counties, Kansas. On November 8, 1874, he married Sarah Ann Cohoe, daughter of John Cohoe and Amanda Catherine Brown, in Woodson County, Kansas. They raised their family in Cottage Grove Township, Allen County, Kansas, where he worked at farming. He was preceded in death by his wife and one daughter, Lena Lorena. Other children were Nettie May, Edward Allen, Leslie Oliver, Emma Della and Samuel Franklin
