All American Football Player Coached At Several Schools

Robert George "Bobby" Hoppe, died at his residence April 7, 2008.

Mr. Hoppe was a native of Chattanooga. He had lived for the past seven years in Clarksville and returned recently to Chattanooga with his wife after she retired as president of Austin Peay State University.

An outstanding football player, he was Chattanooga's first All American. He went on to play at Auburn University, where he was All-Southeastern Conference. He played on Auburn's 1957 national championship team. He earned a bachelor's degree from Auburn and a master's degree from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

He was a former teacher and head football coach in Georgia and also coached in Tennessee. In addition, he served as athletic and recreational director at two colleges.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert George Hoppe Sr. and Juanita Phillips Hoppe, and sisters, Doris Watson and Martha McKnight.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sherry L. Hoppe, Chattanooga; son, Kevin Hoppe, daughter-in-law, Michelle; and grandson, Ryan, Athens, Tennessee; sister, Joan Voiles, Chattanooga; several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church.

The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the service in the Barth Room at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John's Church, Clarksville, Tn.; Grace Episcopal Church, Chattanooga; or to the Bob and Sherry Hoppe Endowed Scholarship for Study Abroad at Austin Peay State University, Clarksville, Tn.

Arrangements are by Heritage Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 7454 E. Brainerd Road.
