David was accidently shot by one of his sons. He was on one side of his orchard pruning trees and the boys were hunting squirrels on the other side. One of the bullets fired, missed the squirrel and came down and hit David in the thigh. A member of the family, just after the shooting, got on a mule to go for the doctor. They had to cross Cache Creek which, at the time, was rain-swollen. As the mule started to cross the bridge, he balked and refused to continue. The rider finally gave up trying to get the mule to cross so he turned the mule around and rode off the bridge. Just as the mule cleared the bridge, it collapsed into the rain-swollen creek.
David died about a week after the accident, not of the gunshot, but from blood poisoning. In her will, Margaret "Bettie" left her daughter $10,000.00. and her three sons were left equal shares in property and real estate. Lands adjoin land of G. D. Stephens. The Adams subdivision of the Rancho Canada de Capay in mentioned as is the Adams Water Ditch a. k. a. the Capay Water Ditch.
