Governor of West Virginia. He was raised in Mount Hope, graduated from West Virginia's Wesleyan College, and founded an automobile dealership and a real estate business, also serving in the West Virginia National Guard, attaining the rank of First Sergeant. In 1932 injuries from a hunting accident resulted in the amputation of his legs. He served on the Mount Hope City Council, was President of the Fayette County Court from 1935 to 1941 and served as Fayette County Sheriff from 1941 to 1944. In 1944 he managed the campaign of Governor Clarence Meadows, and he served as Meadows' Executive Assistant until he resigned in 1948 to campaign for Governor in his own right. Patteson was the successful Democratic nominee and served the one term allowed by law, 1949 to 1953. During his administration, the state Board of Health was created, a medical school was located at West Virginia University, and a commission was created to oversee construction of the West Virginia Turnpike. After leaving office Patteson served as General Manager of the West Virginia Turnpike Commission, and was active in banking and real estate development, as well as serving on the National Advisory Council of the Federal Civil Defense Administration, the West Virginia Wesleyan College Board of Trustees, the state Board of Regents, and The Sons of the American Revolution, West Virginia Society. The auditorium at West Virginia University in Morgantown, the National Guard armory in Oak Hill, and the West Virginia Turnpike are all named for him.
