DR. ARCHIBALD MATTHEWS.
A protracted illness ended in the death Sunday morning at the family home at 411 Quince street, of Dr. Archibald Matthews, 74 years old, Civil war veteran and well-known veterinary surgeon, who located in Olympia 15 years ago. The funeral took place at the Jesse T. Mills chapel Tuesday afternoon, being conducted by the local G. A. R. post, assisted by the Women's Relief Corps. Interment was made in the Masonic cemetery. Dr. Matthews was born at Westmoreland, Penn., March 4, 1845, and when the Civil war broke out enlisted at Fairfield, Iowa, serving three years. He was a member of Company M, Seventh regiment, Iowa Volunteers, his officers being Captain Courtright, Captain Wolfe and General George Seeley. When he was discharged from the service he practiced his profession at Plattsmouth, Iowa, until he came West. He was married at Omaha, Neb., February 21, 1874, his widow surviving him. He also leaves one daughter, Mrs. Hulton Loughnan of this city; three brothers, John and Alex of Pendleton, Ore., and James of Arnold, Neb.; and a sister, Mrs. Owen Jones of Inkster, N. D.
