On 8 Aug. 1776, at the age of 15, he was enlisted in the Maryland "Flying Camp", in Frederick Co., Maryland. Fought in battles at White Plains, New York on 22 Aug. 1776. Unit disbanded on Dec. 1776. Re-enlisted 28 Dec. 1776 as a Private in the 13 VA Regt., Light Infantry. Fought in the battle of Brandywine at Chadd's Ford, PA on 11 Sept. 1777 and then spent the winter of 1777-17788 in camp at Valley Forge, PA. Discharged in 1780 while stationed at Fort Pitt. He then returned to Maryland and married Mary Lakin. They moved first to Penn., then Kentucky, next to Clermont Co., Ohio, and finally to Rush Co., Indiana.
