Andrew was the illegitimate son of Catherine Rothell and William David Deaton. He married Eliza Jane Friar in 1867, having 12 children. He served in the 24th GA infantry in the Confederate army during the Civil War, in Wofford's Brigade. He was wounded in the right thigh at the Battle of Crampton's Gap, and was soon after captured near Antietam. Following the war, he continued his work as a farmer. He was a Baptist.
