John, the son of Lewis and Nancy Ann (Lily) DeGraft left Maryland and journeyed to Rhode Island in the late 1890's. He and his second wife, Emily Jane (Parks) DeGraft raised a family of eight additional children in the MA area. John was a Civil War Veteran,a blacksmith and particulaly known for his vegetable gardens.On John's stone it will be noted his middle initial is L. not T. He preferred the middle name Lewis.
