Tragedy struck Thursday, October 19, 1984, when Steve along with friend Ricky McPheron were killed in a fire that occurred in an South Kansas City apartment located above a garage. Originally the fire was ruled to be the work of an arsonist. Kansas City Police and Fire department investigators later revised their findings and pointed the blame to a faulty space heater. However, behind the scenes and off the record, department officials as well as other private investigators knew the truth to be otherwise.
