MARTIN (MARTY) A. WHETSTONE 90, CMSgt., U.S. Air Force (Ret.) of New Carlisle, Ohio passed away Tuesday March 11, 2008 in Springfield, Ohio. Born March 17, 1917 in Kewanee, Illinois the only son of the late Charles & Mabel Whetstone, Marty was a 1935 graduate of Wethersfield H.S. (Kewanee). He retired from the Air Force in 1965 after 25 years military career as a Chief Air Traffic Controller. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, of 58 years. He is survived by his three children, all of Ohio: Terry (Jan) Whetstone, Springfield; Debbie (Jim) Pierson, Huber Heights; and Jerry (Donna) Whetstone, New Carlisle; eight grandchildren and spouses; Lisa (Dan) Bealert, Steven (Beth) Whetstone, Amy Pierson, Lori (Josh) Grow, Kristy (Matt) Williams, Mandi (Andy) McKinley, Joe and Jake Whetstone; seven great grandchildren; Jessica Reeves; Kaitlyn, Andrew, and Tyler Whetstone; Charlie Williams; and Alaina and Adam Bealert. An active Mason for 65 years (parent lodge, Kewanee, IL), he was a Past President New Carlisle Sertoma Club, Past District Governor Sertoma Int'l, Past President Sertoma Gold Coaters and Past President of both George Rogers Clark Chapter, Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and Ohio Society SAR, serving on SAR committees at chapter, state, and national levels and was a Kentucky Colonel. As a volunteer at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force, with over 14,000 hrs, being named the 2003 Volunteer of the Year. An avid fan of auto racing, he attended 42 Indy 500 races and many NASCAR events. A gathering of family and friends will be held 5-8 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2008 at the First United Methodist Church, New Carlisle. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday with a visitation one hour prior to services at the church, Rev. Jeff Burdsall officiating. Burial will be in Medway Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 220 S. Main St., New Carlisle, Ohio 45344 or charity of choice. The family wishes to extend appreciation to the staffs of Mercy Medical Center and Oakwood Village. Arrangements by the TROSTEL, CHAPMAN, DUNBAR & FRALEY FUNERAL HOME, New Carlisle, Ohio.
