DR. GREENE, PROMINENT BUSINESS
MAN, DROPS DEAD AT HIS HOME.

Dr. A. S. Greene, who for 35 years has been one of the prominent business men of the city, dropped dead this morning at the family residence, 1045 Riveraide-av.

Dr. Greene was born near Salem, Washington-co, Ind., June 12, 1836. He was educated in the common schools, studied medicine in BelleVue college. New York, and in Paris. Graduating with honor, he began the practice of medicine In New Albany, Ind.. where he soon took rank among the leading physicians of the community. On the breaking out of the Civil war he was appointed assistant surgeon in the United States army; had charge of the army hospital at New Albany and a greater part of the time with the army in the South. He spent some time on a naval vessel as surgeon in Europe. At the close of the war he resumed the pratice of his profession at New Albany, Ind.

It is said that skepticism about the value of the drug treatment caused him to abandon the profession and he became district agent for a life insurance com-pany and subsequently, in 1875, moved to Evansville and in partnership with his brother, W. P. Greene, established a general insurance agency in the city.

The firm was dissolved some years ago, and Alfred Greene, son of Dr. A. S. Greene, took the place of his uncle, and the business was continued in the firm name of Greene & Greene.

Dr. Greene was not much given to , society, and his associations, outside of his business, were largely with particular individuals, for whom he showed real attachment. He was a man of wide reading and generous culture.

Knowing and appreciating the laws of hygiene, his mental vigor appeared as bright yesterday and even this morning, as at any time in his life, and he was in fairly good physical health when the summons came so suddenly and unexpectedly. He was the last to leave the office at the close of business last evening.

Dr. Greene is survived by one son, Alfred Greene, with whom he was in the insurance business; on brother, Chas. P. Greene; of Indianapolis. and three grandchildren, Alfred Green, jr., Josephine Green and Jessica Green, all of Evansville.
