Homicide victim. Clara Birdlong was considered missing from the 1970s until September 2021, when her remains were confirmed by DNA as those of "Escatawpa Jane Doe," found by hunters in December 1977. Based on autopsy at the time, she was believed to have died three or four months prior. In 2018, serial killer Samuel Little confessed to several killings in the Southeastern US, including "Escatawpa Jane Doe," though he did not know her name. Little died in prison in December 2020 while serving consecutive life sentences for multiple murders.

The Jackson County Sheriff's Department matched Clara's DNA to that of her grandmother in Texas. Clara was named after her aunt. Both her aunt and mother have passed away. Her grandmother and cousins survive her.

Gratitude to Anjuan Brown, county supervisor in the community where the Birdlongs once lived, who helped the Jackson County Sheriff's Department find and notify her family.
