Myles Fenske
March 21, 1988 - September 19, 2020

Myles Preston Fenske age 32, passed unexpectedly on 9/19/20 the day before he was going to hike Brienzergrat in Interlaken, Switzerland. He was born on 3/21/88 in Charlotte, NC to Linda and Wesley Fenske.
He graduated from Apex High school in 2006. Received a B.S. in Biology from the University of Wilmington in 2010, and a PhD. in Biology at the University of Washington in 2017.
During his PhD. Studies, Myles was the 1st to reveal the cellular mechanisms by which a plant-pollinator interaction occurs at a specific time of the day. Myles showed that both plants and insects use their internal timing mechanisms, the circadian clocks, to control the timing of floral scent emission and seeking flowers for nectar within a day. Myles used Petunia and Hawkmoth, both of which meet only nighttime, to study the mechanisms.
After receiving his Doctorate he moved to Zurich, Switzerland to pursue post-doctoral studies at ETH Zurich, a leading public research university. Myles's research focused on understanding how the molecular mechanisms that regulate plant flowering respond to environmental influences, a topic with important implications for agriculture as well as ecology and conservation.
He started training for marathons with his ETH coworkers & completed a team run marathon in 2019, and a solo marathon on the original path in Athens Greece. He also enjoyed hiking, camping, traveling, and cooking (his favorites were cheesecake, pulled pork, chicken wings & cheese fondue).
Myles is survived by his mother, Linda; father, Wesley; brother, Jason; Jason's wife Tara; and significant other, Kristen Bales.
Our family had a private gathering for the memorial service.
The Fenske Family requests that memorial gifts be made in support of the Biology Graduate Student Support Fund at the University of Washington. Checks made payable to the "UW Foundation" can be mailed to:
