Charles Cranston Adams, Sr. a.k.a. Bud, Chuck and "Papa Chuck" departed this life in Richmond, VA on July 25, 2021 at the age of 79. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents-in-law, Charles Harry Pummery and Bessie Naomi Pummery as well as his parents, Charles Franklin Adams, Jr. and Pauline Szpir Adams. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Naomi Ruth Adams, his son Jeffrey Scott Adams, his son Charles Cranston Adams, Jr. who dragged into the family cherished daughter-in-law Tammy Barton.
Bud grew up playing baseball in Dundalk, MD and upon graduating joined the Army National Guard. Shortly thereafter he became a Baltimore City Police Officer, where in the course of his duties he met a nurse who caught more than his eye at Church Home and Hospital in Baltimore. Chuck married Naomi on 12-16-67 and 10 years later he moved to the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Until his retirement in 1989 he continued as a Sergeant in the Eastern District of Baltimore City Police Department, enduring a daily commute of two hours each way to give his sons a better life. After retirement he worked for B&G Foods, Dorchester County Sheriff's Department both in corrections and as a bailiff. Upon his second retirement, he loved to volunteer his time at Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge before moving to Richmond to live his golden years.
Chuck enjoyed trips to the beach with his family (Nags HeadOcean City), golf, playing cards, crabbing, fishing, woodworking, and knocking back a pint or two. When he didn't have his nose in a book, he especially cherished movie nights with Naomi who recorded John Wayne movies on the DVR. He loved meeting new people and hearing about their lives even if he only met them once. Those who remember him in his prime will remember the twinkle in his eye and the joy in his heart. Those same people might also remember him as rough around the edges, quick to temper and scary at times. To know him, you had to know him, but know he loved you in his way.
There will be a visitation for family and friends at Bliley's, 8510 Staples Mill Road in Richmond on Sunday, August 1, 2021 from 4 to 6 p.m. A graveside service for family will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 2, 2021 in Roselawn Memory Gardens in Hanover. In lieu of flowers, crack a beer or mix yourself a Manhattan and share a memory of Chuck that made you smile.
