Fjóla was a victim of the Flateyri avalanche. On the 26th of October, 1995 at 4:00am, massive amounts of snow fell from the nearby mountain down to the small village of Flateyri, Iceland. At the time, all the 45 residents were asleep in their houses. The snow destroyed most of the village. Rescuers managed to find 25 survivors, as well as 20 bodies of innocent people who had perished either due to hypothermia or suffocated under the deep snow. After the avalanche, Iceland built avalanche dams to Westfjords as well as other towns on danger zones to avoid accidents like this happening again.
