SAN DIEGO, CA - Noriko Judy Carney was 87. Noriko was born in Fukushima, Japan the eldest of five children to Shinichi and Umeko (Sakuyama) Enokida. She attended school in Tokyo. During World War Il her high school years were spent doing mandatory work in local aircraft and gun factories. After the war ended Noriko worked at various U.S. Army Camps around the Tokyo - Fukushima areas. It was during this time that she acquired her nickname "Judy". In December 1955 she met her future husband Herman Carney, a U.S. Navy sailor, in a restaurant in Yokosuka where she worked. The operating schedule of his ship, the USS Firedrake AE-14, left their relationship a "catch-as-catch-can" romance. September 1957 saw the chance for them to be together when Herman received assignment to the USS Luzon ARG-2 in Sasebo and their romance grew from there. Noriko and Herman were married at the American Consulate in Fukuoka, Japan on June 24, 1958. In 1972 Noriko became a U.S. citizen and chose "Judy" as her middle name. During the 26 years of
following Herman's Navy career she moved 11 times. After Herman retired from the Navy they decided to make San Diego their home. Having lived in Brooklyn NY, Great Lakes IL and Philadelphia PA she said she was "tired of the snow and cold".
Noriko was preceded by her parents and daughter, Michiko Patricia (1960).
