CATHERINE MURPHY EX-SCHOOL OFFICIAL

LYNN- Miss Catherine L. Murphy, 32 Baltimore St., who worked as a teacher and supervisor in the Lynn school system for 50 years, died Thursday at home after a lengthy illness.
A lifelong resident of Lynn, Miss Murphy was the daughter of the late Michael W. and Catherine (Burke) Murphy. She was the first Lynn resident ever to serve as supervisor in the elementary grades. Before that she had served as principal of the Washington Community School and earlier as a teacher.
Miss Murphy was a graduate of English High. She received her bachelor of science degree from Salem State College, a master of science degree from Boston University, master of arts degree from Columbia University and had completed all the courses required for a doctorate.
While supervisor of grades 1, 2 and 3, she aided in the opening of nine new schools, introduced a modern reading program, revised continuously the instructional guidelines for teachers in the first three grades and served for three years as chairman of the in-Service Committee.
She served as chairman of the Junior Red Cross in Lynn during World War I. She was chairman of a group which organized the school lunch program. She was a pioneer in child welfare work through the original Child Welfare Organization, which later became the Greater Lynn Mental Health Center.
Miss Murphy served on the Lynn Rationing Board during World War II and as a director of the Junior Red Cross. She was a member of Pi Lambda Theta; q national honor society for women in education; the Association for Childhood Education; the Lynn Teacher's Club and Local 1037, the Lynn Teachers Union.
Miss Murphy leaves two sisters, Miss Theresa L. Murphy, a retired guidance councilor at Classical High, with whom she lived, and Mrs., Mary M. Quirk, wife of Dr. Thomas Quirk, of Lynn. She also leaves several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held Monday, at 10 a.m. from her late residence followed by a funeral Mass at 11 in St. John the Evangelist Church, Swampscott.
Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Cuff-McGinn Funeral Home.
