Charles L. Hessman, 70, a resident of the boondocks (Elkinsville) of Brown County, IN passed away Friday, March 23, 2018 at Columbus Regional Hospital in Columbus, IN. He was born December 15, 1947 in Indianapolis, IN to Charles Hessman and Ruth Catherine (Polston) Hessman.

He attended Franklin Central High School in 1965. He was a United States Army Veteran of the Vietnam War, where he received the Purple Heart. He had worked at International Harvester in Indianapolis, IN for ten years. He later was a self-employed brick mason. He was a person of free spirit. He enjoyed hiking, fishing, and the outdoors. Charlie loved his kids and grandkids with all his heart, often leaving them with his prized treasures. He was a simple man, who enjoyed simple things in life. He owned Wilderness Canoes in Brown County. For those of you who were blessed to meet Charlie, you would understand how eccentric he was. For those of you who didn’t know Charlie, you missed out!!!

Survivors include his children, Shannon Sexson (John) of Indianapolis, IN, Charles Hessman (Vicki) of Franklin, IN and Holly Jo Stalets (Steve) of Trafalgar, IN; fourteen grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Keith Hessman (Linda) of Nashville, IN; two sisters Joanie Lynn Burris (Gary) of Nashville, IN and Susie Groce (Brian) of Indianapolis, IN; and the mother of his children, Louisa Ann Tumey of Fairland, IN.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Kathy Merchant and Julie Ann Abbott.
