Josephine (Joey) Marie Zimmer (nee Reit) died peacefully at her home in Saskatoon on Thursday, July 28, 2011. Josephine was born on January 1, 1917 in Peebles, SK and her father moved the family to Dumas, SK so the children could learn French. A fond memory was winning a rosary in a French spelling competition. She served many local medical and translation necessities in the community with her French, German, Ukrainian, and Polish capabilities. After attending school in Dumas, Wolseley, Wawota and Carnduff, she studied nursing in St. Boniface, MB. Josephine met Joseph I. Zimmer of Grayson, SK (1910 1994) at a dance in Stockholm. They were married May 6, 1941. Moving to Kuroki, SK they had three sons. Active as an organist for Catholic churches in Kuroki, Wadena and Quill Lake, she was also an active partner in the family farm implement auctioneering business and she also sold Studio Girl Products, acted as Altar Society President and was Secretary of the School Board for many years. Joey performed for many Local talent and radio amateur hours in the 40's and 50's. She taught piano lessons to students from Kuroki, Wadena, Margo, Rama and Invermay, and played organ and piano for church and community functions. She enjoyed winter and international travel including a visit to her parents' homeland of Austria and Poland. Josephine and Joe had three sons: Wayne (Barb) and three grandsons, Christopher, Michael (Amanda) and Andrew; Senator Rodney, and Donald (deceased). Joey and Joe lived with Wayne and Barb and grandchildren for over 40 years on the farm in Saskatoon. Her greatest joy was her grandsons. In her words Grandmas do not know what joy and love they miss when they can't be put in my place living with them. Every Gramma should experience such love and joy. One of her greatest joys was never missing a soccer game; with one of her grandson's teams she was Grandma Gremio. Our family was blessed by having Mom at home with us until her death. A very special thank you to the loving caregivers of Home Care and Palliative Services (Saskatoon Region). Predeceased by her mother and father Anna and Tony Reit and infant sister Agnes, Joey leaves behind her sons and grandsons, sisters Gertrude Hustak, Agnes Simes-Robertson, and Helen Shivak, her sister-in-law Teresa Newman (Gordon), and numerous nieces and nephews.
