Mr. Steele was born March 12, 1924, in Haywood County in West Tennessee to George William Steele and Irma Williamson Steele. He lived in the Holly Grove Community in Tennessee as a youngster. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II until he was seriously wounded. After being discharged, he married Laverne Ditto in 1945. They moved to Shelby where he was employed by Mitchel Hardware as an appliance and TV service person for 15 years. He was then employed at Baxter Laboratories for 25 years as an air condition specialist. For the 47 years he was in Shelby, he was a member of the First Baptist Church and the First Belleview Baptist Church, where he held many offices including deacon. He was also a member of the Lion's Club for over 25 years. Mr. Steele wore many hats for the Lion's Club, including president. After retiring, he enjoyed fishing and woodworking.
