Cousin Ruthie was the sweetest lady ever. The Hammons family loved her dearly. She was born to John Wesley Hammons and Maude Olive Brown, the oldest of her siblings, Mabel, Rosco, Melva, Lexie, Johnny J and Freddie. They were a beautiful family. I was born in the next generation, the daughter of their first cousin Jim. Everyone of them loved me and showed it. They were all such good looking kids and they loved and respected each other. I always thought they were a perfect family...and I still do.
Ruthie married Robert Shields on Sept. 3, 1927 in Marysville, Yuba Co., CA. They had one child, a daughter named Loraine Ruth. She died when she was about 7 of Bright's Disease. This was such a sad thing to happen to Ruthie. She was a wonderful mother.
Ruthie worked for 'Old Ma Bell' in Marysville, CA. for years and was a Chief Telephone Operator.
Many years after her husband Robert died, Ruthie met and married her second husband at a dance. Ruthie loved to dance and did so well into her 80's. He died before her.
Ruthie contacted pneumonia and died in a rest home in Lincoln, CA. With the exception of brother, Freddie, Ruthie outlived her entire immediate family.
What a 'LADY!'
