Son of Major-General LORD FREDERICK CAVENDISH-BENTINCK and his wife MARY (nee LOWTHER).

He was educated at Westminster school and Trinity College, before going on to a short Commission in the Grenadier Guards regiment, but chose to leave after one year.

From there he went on to play cricket for the Marylebone Cricket Club. He later became a Draughtsman and Conveyancer.

He married PRUDENCE PENELOPE LESLIE on 14th August, 1850. They had four children.

By the late 1850's he had turned to politics and after an initial defeat, he was elected in a by-election to stand as MP for Taunton, Somerset.

His political career flourished and he was eventually sworn to the Privy Council during the second term in office of Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli.

He purchased Brownsea Island (then known as Branksea Island) around 1870 and lived there until his death.
