John was born Dec. 3, 1947 in Clinton, the son of Lloyd and Mary Welch Polen. He married LaDonna Gresham on Oct. 21, 2015 in Clinton. She survives.
Survivors also include his children, Angie (Ken) West, April (Robert Mandrell) Polen, Michelle (Todd) Russell, Misty (David) Lanier, Doug Willis, Tony Willis, Jeremiah Godby and T.J. (Chelsey) Godby; ten grandchildren and siblings, Peggy Woodward, Ida Polen, Ruthann Monkman, Linda (Joe) Early, Joyce (Roger Bernius) Smiley, Jim (Judy) Polen and Sharon Redman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Jason Polen; brothers, Ivan and Joe Polen and sisters, Carolyn Smith, Patsy Bell and Jane Smiley.
John attended Clinton Community High School before joining the U.S. Army, where he served as a radio operator in Vietnam. While serving, he was heavily exposed to Agent Orange, which led to his heart problems.
