Funeral services for Fern M. Chasing Horse, 79, of Rapid City, SD will be 1:00 pm Monday, August 29, 2016 at the Christ Episcopal Church in Fort Thompson with burial in the Christ Episcopal Cemetery at Fort Thompson, SD. Wake services will be Sunday at 7:00 pm at the Christ Episcopal Church in Fort Thompson.

Surrounded by loved ones, Fern Minerva Chasing Horse, age 79, made her journey home on August 24, 2016, at her home in Rapid City, after suffering for years from lung cancer, mesothelioma.

She was born Fern Iron Elk, on November 27, 1936, in Lower Brule, SD. Her parents were Harry Iron Elk and Sophie Williams. All her siblings preceded her in death, except one sister, Darlene Williams. Her brothers included Joey Seeking Land, Darwin Brother of All. Other sisters included Ethel Bad Hand, Constance Quilt, Harriet Lone Hill, Effie Black Bear.

Children included daughters Marlys DeCory (Kendall DeCory, Sr.), Barb Goings, and Michelle Chasing Horse (Deceased); sons Sam Chasing Horse, Jr. (Debra Opland), Jerome Chasing Horse, Chris Jones (Amy Marsh), and Jeffrie Jones, Sr. Grandchildren included Chris Pomani, David Goings, Jr., Donelle Goings, Donald Goings, Patty Goings (Deceased), Kendall DeCory, Jr., Michelle DeCory (Deceased), Kristy DeCory, Jaime DeCory, Michael Lajeunesse, Meldina Lajeunesse, LaSammie Trudell, Jeremy Lajeunesse, Douglas Chasing Horse, Cherice Chasing Horse, Angel Chasing Horse, Alex Jones, Raven Jones, Jeffrie Jones, Jr., and Aquille Jones. She raised her great-granddaughter Danika Goings, and was loved by many other great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends. She had two husbands, Sam Chasing Horse, Sr married August 29,1957. (Deceased), and Buddy Oldman of Riverton, WY.

Fern followed Lakota traditions and spoke the language. She received her GED and attended Oglala Lakota College for three semesters, majoring in human services. Throughout her life, she lived in many places and held various jobs, the most important being a mother and grandmother. She loved to cook, especially fry bread and Indian tacos. Her favorite pastime was playing Bingo
