Elmer Bakke, age 91, of McVille, ND died Sunday, May 22, 2016 at Nelson County Health System Care Center in McVille.

Elmer was born February 1, 1925 in McVille, ND the son of Elmer A. and Tilda (Bue) Bakke. He attended Norway #2 country school near McVille through 8th grade, and then began farming with his father. At age 18 he enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the Pacific Theater during World War II as a Seabee. After the war he returned home to his first love of farming. Elmer married Joan Stenslie on September 30, 1956 in Sheyenne Lutheran Church near Pekin, ND. The couple farmed together in Nesheim and Hamlin Townships until retirement in 1991.

Elmer was an active member of the Sheyenne Lutheran Church where he served on the church council, cemetery board, and acted as treasurer. He also served on the Hamlin Township and McVille School boards. Elmer loved flying and had his own airplane at one time. He was skilled in carpentry and electrical work and could fix practically anything.

Elmer is survived by his wife Joan of McVille, ND; children Mark Bakke of Augusta, GA, Brian (Jannet) Bakke of Rochester, MN, and Susan (Stephen) Braun of McVille, ND; 14 grandchildren Karin Bakke, William Bakke, Matthew Bakke, Brent (Julie) Richardson, Ramsey Phibbs, Jenna (Chris) Gorman, Sonia (Daniel) Mizell, Andrea (Chris) Geck, Kjersti (Jason) Eilers, Stefan Braun, Joseph Braun, Maria (Grayden) Bach, Austin Braun, Timothy Braun, and Anthony Braun; 15 great grandchildren; sister Thelma (Leroy) Barnick, brother-in-law Charles Stenslie, and 6 nieces and nephews.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, and sister-in-law Mary Ann Stenslie.

Funeral services will be Thursday, May 26, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at Sheyenne Lutheran Church, rural Pekin, ND. Visitation will begin 1 hour prior to services in the church. Interment will be in the Sheyenne Church Cemetery, rural Pekin, ND. Military honors will be by Ole Semling American Legion Post 135, McVille, ND.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Nelson County Health Services Foundation, McVille, ND.
