Son of John Gilliam and Hannah Sampson Gilliam. He was the youngest of their seven children. James married first Catherine Birchett of Prince George County 3 July 1828. She died in 1849. James then married Elizabeth Massenburg 30 December 1851. He had five children with Catherine and two with Elizabeth. During the Civil War James served as Lt.Col. of the 9th Regiment Virginia Volunteers. The 9th Virginia fought in the Battle of Seven Pines, The Seven Days Battle, Malvern Hill, 2nd Manassas, Sharpsburg,the Battle of Fredericksburg ,Gettysburg,New Berne, Chester Station, Petersburg and Five Forks. After the War James was appointed a vestryman of Bristol Parish in 1870. His grave was moved from Old Saint Luke's Cemetery.
