Daniel Gehr
Daniel Gehr, one of the oldest residents of Indian Springs district, died at his home in Indian Springs yesterday morning at 4:20 o'clock, from general debility. He was 77 years, 11 months and 27 days old. Mr. Gehr has lived in Indian Springs all of his life, and was the last of a widely known family. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ella Gehr, and one son, Ralph Raymond Gehr, of Shankstown. Friends who attend the funeral will meet at the home at 12:30 o'clock Tuesday afternoon, and will leave at 1 o'clock. Funeral services will be held in the Lutheran church, Clearspring, the Rev. Dr. Miller officiating. Burial in the cemetery adjoining.

Old Toll Gate House On Route 40 Being Removed At Indian Springs
One of the surviving properties from the old days when travelers toll for the use of almost all roads is vanishing at Indian Springs. An old toll gate stone house that may be 130 years ago, on even older is being torn down on the property of Lee Mummert along US Route 40. A date on the rafter of the old house shows that it was already in use 130 years ago on February 24, 1827. Naturally its quite possible that the date was placed there long after the property was built. Beside the house is an old well with a real old oaken bucket.
The toll gate there served as the midway point between Hagerstown and Hancock. It is just one of numerous properties in the area that had survived through the years, however. A mile further on stands the remodeled old stage coach inn, now occupied by Mr an Mrs Lantz Dahoff. Frontier log cabin houses may be found in spots around Indian Springs, modernized in many cases.
Mrs C. C. James, Indian Springs, Route Two, who has been looking into the history of the property finds that Mr. and Mrs John R Steel were living there when their grandson Albert J Funkhouser was born 88 ago. Mr. Funkhouser now resides with a daughter, Mrs George Sites, Mt. Lena.
The old toll house was next occupied by Daniel Gehr and his wife, Ellie, when they were newlyweds. This couple is now deceased, but their son, Raymond Gehr, is living at Big Pool.
